JOHNNY MURRAY
Originally from Jamaica, West Indies, George “Johnny” Murray brings more than just coaching experience to YMS—he brings passion, perspective, and a relentless belief in every player's potential. Now in his seventh year at YMS, Johnny has become a beloved figure for his calm demeanor, consistent standards, and commitment to personal and team development.
Johnny attended Bridgeport High School before continuing his education at Empire State College. His life in sport, education, and mentorship has been shaped by a blend of structure, patience, and empathy—traits that now define his coaching philosophy.
At YMS, he currently coaches the 2011 Fusion and 2011 Blitz teams, where he is known for his clear communication, hands-on demonstration, and empowering approach to instruction. “Be patient, demonstrate, and make it make sense,” he says. “That’s how young players grow.”
One of his most meaningful coaching memories came after two years of building and developing a team—culminating in an undefeated season that reflected the steady growth, trust, and chemistry he had helped foster. “That kind of progress is what coaching is all about,” he says.
Johnny believes deeply in the role character development plays in youth sports. “Character plays a huge role in my book. Be honest, respectful, and never think you are bigger than the game,” he says. Those values show up in every practice and game he leads.
He holds a USSF D License, underscoring his commitment to coaching education and delivering a top-tier development experience for his players. He is also a former coach at Bucks County Community College and the Philadelphia Fever of the WPSL.
What keeps him motivated? Simple: “To see your players develop right before your eyes. That’s the true reward of coaching.” He encourages his players to keep showing up, put in the effort, and trust the process. His advice is timeless: “Never give up. Put in the time and work into your game—it will pay off.”
Outside of soccer, Johnny enjoys playing chess, traveling to the Caribbean, and supporting his favorite team, Manchester United. Whether on the field or off, he brings focus, wisdom, and heart to everything he does.
