MICHAEL LAWSON
With six years of dedicated coaching experience, Mike Lawson brings a focus on confidence, character, and technical growth to YMS. Originally from Philadelphia, Mike played youth soccer for Philly Coppa, where he won back-to-back state championships—early success that helped shape his passion for both playing and coaching.
He attended Archbishop Ryan High School before continuing his academic journey at Penn State University.
At YMS, Mike currently coaches the U‑8 Academy and also leads the varsity team at Holy Ghost Prep. His sessions are built around a core principle: “Building confidence on the ball”, encouraging players to trust themselves and enjoy the process.
Character development is a key pillar of Mike’s approach, with a consistent message:
“Be yourself,” he says, stressing self-awareness, respect, and resilience in every training and match.
One of his highlight coaching memories includes traveling to National League Pro events and making Nationals with his team—a testament to his ability to prepare players for high-level competition.
What drives Mike as a coach? “Youth development,” he says, with a clear focus on helping each player grow. His advice to those facing adversity:
“Keep fighting and competing!”
Mike is also committed to his formal training, holding a USSF Grassroots License, which guides his work to build foundational skills and confidence in young players.
Outside of soccer, Mike works professionally at Vanguard, where his emphasis on discipline and excellence aligns with his coaching values. He’s a passionate supporter of FC Barcelona, bringing both tactical insight and global love of the game to every session.
