KARINA KOVALCIK
Hailing from New Hope, Pennsylvania, Karina Kovalcik brings Ivy League experience, a fierce competitive spirit, and a nurturing approach to player development in her role at YMS.
A graduate of Council Rock High School North, Karina went on to play Division I soccer at Yale University, where she sharpened her skills in one of the nation’s most academically and athletically demanding environments. Her playing career also includes a major highlight: winning the US Club National Championship, a testament to her drive, leadership, and ability to perform on the biggest stages. That blend of high expectations both on and off the field now informs her coaching style—challenging players to push their limits while maintaining a fun and supportive environment.
Now in her fourth year at YMS, Karina coaches the 2010 Girls Steel team. She is driven by a deep love for the game and a strong belief in the transformative power of soccer. “I think one of the most—if not the most—important aspects of youth soccer is character development,” she says. “Sports can shape how young people approach life, adversity, and leadership.”
Her coaching philosophy is rooted in balancing intensity with encouragement: “Challenge them as much as I can while still having fun.” Karina takes great pride in seeing players accomplish things they never thought possible—moments that light up their faces and reveal just how far they’ve come.
Karina’s advice to players is simple and powerful: “Never give up.” Whether things are going well or falling apart, she encourages her players to keep showing up, keep working hard, and believe in themselves.
Though she doesn’t have a favorite professional club, Karina enjoys watching the Olympics and the World Cup, where the global spirit and highest level of the game come together to inspire players and coaches alike.
