Maddie Elwell and Murphy Agnew, both members of the 2016 USYSA National Championship winning YMS Premier Xplosion 98, have been selected in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) 2021 Discovery Draft.
The Discovery draft has been expanded due to the COVID-19 epidemic to include players who have used three seasons of eligibility and could possibly play their final collegiate season in the spring or fall of 2021.
Maddie Elwell, a Human and Organizational Development major at Vanderbilt University, was selected by the Orlando Pride. Elwell, a four-year starter for the Commodores is a two-time All-SEC selection. During her tenure at Vanderbilt, the team has won SEC regular season, SEC East and SEC tournament championship. Vanderbilt will be a favorite in the upcoming COVID-rescheduled Spring 2021 NCAA tournament.
Murphy Agnew, an Environmental Engineering major at Harvard University, was selected by the OL Reign of Tacoma Washington. Agnew, a three-year starter for the Crimson, was the Ivy League Freshman of the Year in 2017 and Offensive Player of the Year in 2019. The Ivy League canceled the 2020 season. Agnew will be returning to Cambridge in the fall of 2021 for her final college season.
Both Elwell and Agnew scored in the YMS Premier Xplosion 98’s dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory in the 2016 National Championship game in Frisco Texas.
